Defence

The most recent visit by HMS ECHO, a Royal Naval Hydrography ship, was intended to strengthen the ties between the Royal Navy's Hydrography service and that of the Algerian Navy.

The Defence Section within the British Embassy was re-established in September 2005. The Section aims to develop strong ties between the Algerian and British Armed Forces and has already placed Algerian Military officers on many varied technical and basic military training courses in the UK, with the Royal Navy and the British Army in particular.

During the past three years 6 Royal Navy warships have visited Algiers on Naval diplomacy tasking and the Algerian warship El Kirsh visited the UK for the Trafalgar 200th anniversary in 2005. The most recent visit by HMS ECHO, a Royal Naval Hydrography ship, was intended to strengthen the ties between the Royal Navy's Hydrography service and that of the Algerian Navy.

The Defence Section works closely with the British Ministry of Defence and its Algerian equivalent in London to develop new programmes and opportunities between the two nation's Armed Forces.
